Yearly Guide & Report

Boxing gloves are designed to protect your hands and your opponent during a match. However, when buying a new pair, you may be overwhelmed by the different types and characteristics of this type of protective gear. Here is some information regarding boxing gloves that will certainly make things clearer for any customer.

Sizing

Boxing gloves don’t follow the type of sizing found in other clothing items. Instead of the small, medium, large, etc. they are categorized by their weight. In addition to that, sizing is influenced by the fighters’ weight category, glove type, the fighting organization and the type of boxing match being organized. Boxing gloves weight varies between 8 ounces and 20 ounces.

For example, gloves will be of a larger size if the boxer who wears them is heavier, or if they’ll be used for punching a heavy bag. A 180-pound fighter will have no problem in wearing 16 oz gloves or above, especially when training. A fighter who weighs 120 pounds or less will find the 12 oz boxing gloves more suitable for him to use.

All glove sizes translate to how much protection they offer you and your opponent. Heavier gloves better protect only your hands, not what you are hitting. Therefore, they are used when punching a heavy bag. Lighter gloves, below 12 oz, protect both your hands and your sparring partner or your opponent, so you will see them more often being used inside the ring.

The gloves used in competition are light, usually weighing 10 ounces. The boxers come to an agreement in advance regarding the boxing glove size they will use during the fight.

Online, you can find all sorts of charts depicting the correlation between the fighters’ weight and different glove type sizes. However, the best thing you can do is to talk to your coach and listen to his/her advice as they know best what you need for your training.

Boxing gloves – Types

Boxing bag gloves, also known as training gloves are used for punching heavy bags or double end bags. Their design protect your hands more than whatever you are hitting, so you shouldn’t spar while wearing bag gloves. These can be worn without you wrapping your hands in advance, although it is highly recommended to do so nonetheless.

Training gloves come in all sizes, from the ones with just a little padding to more heavy ones that reach 16 ounces and above. Beginners will often start with heavy bag gloves to improve their stamina and shoulder strength.

Boxing gloves often referred to as sparring gloves, are the protective equipment you wear when you are training in the ring with a partner or when you are boxing in an official match. They are designed to protect both your hands and your partner as well.

When training, boxers typically use 16 ounces gloves and when boxing in a match they traditionally choose the 10 ounces size. Sizes are generally discussed with and recommended by your coach before you engage in any boxing-related activity. Both types of gloves are fastened using Velcro straps, laces, or a combination of both.

Composite materials

At first, boxing gloves were exclusively made from leather. As time went by, synthetic alternatives were created. Synthetic gloves are designed to absorb the impact and slip over the opponent’s skin without catching as much as leather gloves. However, leather gloves are still manufactured today and prove to be much more durable.

Old school boxers will always choose leather gloves over the synthetic ones. There are leather boxing gloves manufacturers who make the grain just right in order not to be abrasive on impact. Leather gloves are generally more expensive as they don’t wear out as fast as other models.

Brands

There are many companies that produce and sell good quality boxing gloves. Some of the most trustworthy brands include Winning, Cleto Reyes, Rival, Title, Venum, Everlast, Fairtex, Grant, etc. All these companies have their own personal strengths and weaknesses. However, this is what gives them personality.

Although Winning makes some of the best quality gear that you can buy, the products are pretty expensive, so customers chose other brands that offer similar quality gloves at lower prices. Venum and Hayabusa seem to be popular choices at the moment.

Certain brands are specialized only in some fighting styles. For example, if you practice Muay Thai you should wear more flexible gloves that favor grappling. Fairtex and Twins are two companies that manufacture great Muay Thai gloves.

Frequently asked questions about boxing gloves

How much do boxing gloves weigh?

Boxing gloves have varying weights, starting from 6 ounces (for children) to 20 ounces. When boxers are training in the gym and are punching a heavy bag or sparring with a partner, they wear heavier boxing gloves. These boxing gloves weigh around 12 or 14 ounces. This way, the hands are better protected and the striking speed will be increased when switching to lightweight gloves.

In official matches, the fighters wear lighter gloves. These are thinner and typically weigh between 10 and 12 ounces. In the lightweight fighting category, boxers use gloves that weigh as little as 8 ounces during official matches.

How to clean boxing gloves?

After you use the boxing gloves, they must not be stored in a gym bag. You have to open each glove and dry it on the inside first. An easy to implement solution is to wipe the boxing gloves with a paper towel both on the outside and on the inside. This absorbs sweat and prevents the surfaces from getting bacteria.

Some people hold the gloves in front of a fan in order to accomplish that. Additionally, you can use sprayable odor absorber on the inside to eliminate bad smell and antibacterial spray to kill the germs.

What size boxing gloves should I get?

Instead of small, medium or large, the boxing glove sizes are determined by their weight. Children should wear gloves between 4 and 6 ounces. Products between 8 and 12 ounces are often worn by lightweight fighters and are used for speedwork in general. You can practice shadowboxing, sparring and speed boxing on a heavy bag with these.

16-ounce gloves or heavier are designed for heavyweight boxers and are used for heavy impact training. Although this kind of equipment weighs more, it’s more damaging for an sparring partner. 16-ounce boxing gloves offer more protection only for your knuckles and wrists.

Where to buy boxing gloves?

The easiest way to access a large variety of products is by checking out online shops. From the comfort of your home, you can find plenty of products varying in cost and quality. You can read boxing gloves reviews, ratings and buyer opinions that will help you decide what gear is suitable for you.

The other option you have is to go and browse for boxing gloves at your local sports store. There, you have the opportunity to try on more pairs and actually feel them. Another place where you could find boxing gloves for sale is at your local gym.

How much are boxing gloves?

An average pair of boxing gloves can cost anywhere between $20 and $200. A good rule of thumb regarding gloves is that the price is directly proportional with quality. Cheap boxing gloves are made with poor quality materials, are not durable and often come from unknown brands.

For a pair of good boxing gloves, you can pay more than $200. However, you will make a good investment as the technology involved in making it and the materials are far superior. Consider it an investment that enhances your training experience and improves both protection and comfort, as well.

How to make boxing gloves?

If you prefer to make your own boxing gloves instead of buying a pair, you have a few methods at your disposal. First of all, you need hand wraps. You have to wrap them around your wrists and palms properly in order to better secure and protect your hands.

Begin with wrapping your wrists a few times and before going towards the palm, introduce a flat piece of padding that will cover the back of your hand beginning from the forearms’ end to your fingertips. You should use something rubbery, or any spongeous material. Continue to wrap over your padding, binding it to your fingers.

How to break in boxing gloves?

Although new boxing gloves are a little stiff, you can break them in so that they feel a little more comfortable. What most people do is to close and open their fists while wearing the gloves. This makes them more flexible in time. Some boxers claim that sitting on them for a while helps to break in the padding.

That being said, you must be careful not to overdo it. If you overextend your fist, you can actually tear the foam that protects your knuckles and instead of breaking in the glove you would just simply break it.

Do boxing gloves hurt?

New boxing gloves feel a little stiff at first and even the most comfortable models may feel awkward to wear for beginners. Other than that, their simple design makes them an efficient piece of gear that manages to absorb the impact of a punch, so boxing gloves do not hurt when you use them.

Depending on the glove size, the boxer will experience more or less of the counterforce as the level of padding varies. If you are boxing incorrectly you may experience wrist aches, but that is pretty much all the pain you may feel in your hands when using boxing gloves.

How are boxing gloves supposed to fit?

After you have decided on the sizing, you must wrap your hands and put the gloves on. They should be tight, but not so tight as to restrict blood circulation. Your fingertips must reach and press firmly against the top of the glove. Also, the wrists must be secured with Velcro straps or tighten with the laces, depending on the model you own.

If you are training by yourself, you should acquire gloves that feature Velcro straps instead of laces. It is extremely difficult to adjust laces by yourself, so unless you have a sparring partner, use the straps as they are easier to handle.
