Are Boxing Gloves Allowed on Planes?

Last Updated: 23.08.19

Boxing gloves are allowed on planes as long as you put them in your check-in luggage. As shown in our recent article, they will not be accepted by airlines in your carry-on luggage. You need to check with the airline what the rules and regulations concerning boxing gear are before you purchase a plane ticket.

As you might already suspect, boxing gloves are allowed on airplanes, but since they are considered part of combat gear, some airlines might have particular guidelines for transporting them. We all know that there has been a long debate on what things are and should be allowed on board of airplanes and which should not.

Before getting to the airport

When you are traveling, the most important thing you should keep in mind is that each airline might have a different approach for particular items, such as boxing gloves. That’s why, the safest approach you can have is to check all the information provided when you make the booking and then ask for details, if necessary.

Moreover, if you want to make sure that you get a timely response, you shouldn’t wait until the last minute to do so. Once you get to the airport, there’s really little that you can do in terms of reaching an agreement with the airline’s representatives or discussing a particular situation.

It’s true that gloves might not be considered potentially dangerous items by some airlines, but if they are, you want to be aware of this as soon as possible, in order to know how you can transport them. After all, high-quality boxing gloves can cost quite a bit, so you might not want to run into the risk of having to leave them in an airport.

Another aspect you should consider, especially when you are traveling with multiple stops, is checking everything with each airline on your route. If the first one allows boxing gloves on board, it doesn’t mean that the second one follows the same guidelines.

If you’ve made reservations through a travel agent, then you should inform them of any particular needs that you might have during your flight, as soon as possible. The general rule says that you should gather all the information you need when you are making your reservations or at least a couple of days before the departure date.

Of course, this applies for any type of special request, from using a wheelchair to particular dietary restrictions. Maybe you don’t think that boxing gloves should fall into the same category, but it all depends on each airline’s rules and regulations.

A bit about rules and regulations

According to the rules and regulations of each individual airline and country of destination, there are some things that you are allowed to transport only in the checked-in luggage, while others you are not permitted at all.

The main idea behind them is minimizing associated risks for all the passengers that are traveling on any flight. For instance, you are not allowed to carry a razor blade in your carry on luggage, in case you or anyone else that might have access to it would intend to hurt other passengers with it.

Following the same logical explanation, passengers are not allowed to transport any sort of food or plants from one country to another, because doing so means that all sorts of bacteria or parasites might make their way to other locations as well.

History taught us a lot of lessons in this sense, given that many diseases have traveled between continents once people started to explore the world using ships. However, we will not go into details when it comes to our ancestors.

Going back to airlines, it’s important to know that some rules are generally applicable for pretty much any well-known airline you might use. One of them is the ban on carrying more than 100ml of liquids, which was introduced as a safety measure against terrorist attacks in 2006.

Others rules depend on each airline’s policies, and this is the category under which boxing gloves fall as well. To better understand why boxing gloves might be restricted, transport-wise, let’s take a closer look at some facts about them.

What are boxing gloves?

Boxing gloves have been around since ancient history. However, back in the day, they had a very different design and they were used as weapons in man-to-man combat, rather than being used for protecting a boxer’s hands, as it’s the case today. These items have evolved a lot throughout time, but they remain an absolute must-have for any boxing gear.

There are numerous types of such gloves that you can find on the market, each with different characteristics. This is both a good and a bad thing when you think about it from an airline’s point of view. However, for those who practice this wonderful sport, each model might suit a different need, which means that variety is good.

Various boxing styles require specific gear, therefore it is very important for each boxer to choose the right model for him. They are used for both training and competitions, but here as well there are different options to choose from, depending on the desired result.

For instance, “bag boxing gloves” feature more cushioning, which means they are suitable to protect the athlete’s hands, and they are not recommended by experienced fighters for training purposes. Sparring gloves, for example, are similar to training ones, but feature different areas of padding, as they are designed to protect the boxer’s hands during practice bouts.

Other types of gloves worth mentioning are those made for competitions and lace-up ones. The former are meant to protect both athlete’s hands during fighting rounds, and they need to follow official rules and regulations. They are also generally less padded than other types of boxing gloves.

Lace-up gloves are generally used by professional boxers for both training and competitions. They are designed to meet the highest expectations, and they ensure appropriate protection while also allowing the boxer the freedom of movement he needs. This is particularly important in order to make the most out of each training session or to win the boxing match.

The bottom line here is that each boxer should try out different types of boxing gloves and choose the one that works best for his or her needs, and this depends on the skill and experience level as well.

After all, finding that one pair of gloves that enhances one’s performance is many times simply a matter of time and practice.

Traveling with your gear

The most important events in an athlete’s life are competitions. Boxers spend impressive amounts of time training, and they do this on a daily basis. Furthermore, all of this effort has one major goal behind, namely being the best fighter, and one way to achieve it is by entering many competitions to gain experience and improve constantly.

Because not all competitions that matter are close to home, there comes a point in an athlete’s life where he has to travel accompanied by his boxing gear. For locations that are far away, things might get a bit more complicated since carrying a lot of sports gear might be needed.

No matter if we’re talking about boxing gloves alone, or about more elements of your boxing gear, as you are packing, you may want to make sure that all of the items are wrapped in plastic first, to add a layer of protection all-around. Choosing a traveling bag with multiple pockets and openings might also be helpful since you can easily adjust their position inside.

Before packing, you should also check that the gloves and any other boxing items are clean, especially if you are traveling for a longer time. Some anti-bacterial spray might also be helpful in this matter. The gloves should be fixed in a position that protects their shape as much as possible since luggage can sometimes be mishandled.
