How to Clean a BOB Punching Bag

Last Updated: 12.11.19

There are a few things that you should be aware of if you are looking to have the best BOB punching bag. One of them is the right way to clean your training equipment. It is important to keep the training equipment as clean as possible. It doesn’t matter if you are training by yourself at home or you own a gym. Taking care of the punching bags will keep them in top shape and will prevent you from getting sick.

Giving the BOB punching bag a light cleaning

You should do this kind of cleaning every week in order to keep your training equipment in its best shape. Even more often if you are a gym owner since there are a lot more people using the same punching bag.

Before starting to clean the training equipment you should take it apart into smaller pieces. This way it is easier to move around the parts of the free standing punching bag in order to get them as clean as possible.

In a small bucket, mix hot water (around 95°F) with dishwasher soap and a tablespoon of sodium bicarbonate. Using a dishwashing sponge, wash the surface of the dummy while giving it a good scrub.

After the scrub, use a damp cloth to wipe down the surface so the cleaning solution doesn’t get on the floor. You should certainly avoid this situation as the water mixed with dishwasher soap will make your floors really slippery. Take note that this type of cleaning doesn’t kill a lot of germs but helps to remove them.

Disinfecting the BOB punching bag

In order to get a germ-free punching bag, follow these steps:

Step 1. Remove all organic material

First of all, you need to get rid of all the impurities. This includes dirt, pieces of lint and even sweat.

Step 2. Soak the surface

Soaking is a good idea if you are doing it outside. Put hot water together with your favorite cleaning solution in a spray bottle. Don’t count on the high temperature of water to kill the germs.  A temperature high enough to kill germs will cause you skin burns.

Spray the top part of the punching bag and let it act for 10 to 15 minutes. Soaking surfaces will reduce the amount of necessary time in order to do a more complete job.

Step 3. Disinfecting

Disinfecting the bag will be effective only if the surface is completely cleaned (all organic matter has been removed). Disinfectants are used to prevent or destroy microbes on objects or inanimate surfaces. Nevertheless, you will not be able to purchase a disinfectant to work for all situations.

Before deciding on which disinfectant to use, make sure to read the label first. By reading the label, you will have a better understanding of the specific characteristics or effectiveness of a particular disinfectant.

When disinfecting the BOB punching bag, wear protective rubber gloves and glasses. Also, don’t allow kids or pets to have access to cleaning and disinfecting products. In the United States, all disinfectants must be certified by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Step 4. Give it enough drying time

You should consider letting the BOB punching bag dry for an extended period of time. Furthermore, place the bag in a well-ventilated room in order to obtain the maximum effect. Moisture is critical for the survival of viruses and bacteria so this final step is of great importance. If you store the punching bag without it being completely dry, it may develop mold or mildew.

You should not place the bag under direct sunlight. It will damage the bag’s material despite the fact that it will dry faster.

How to clean stains made using training equipment or accessories

Throughout the time, your punching bag might get marks from different training tools. Usually, it gets stained from boxing gloves, shin guards and even rubber knives. The stains could also be from different pieces of clothing. Some athletes place a ski mask or even a karate gi over the punching dummy so they won’t have to use gloves.

Not only this will increase the risk of injury since they don’t have any form of protection for their wrists, but it will make the punching dummy dirtier.

How to get rid of the stains

In order to remove these training marks, you will need to use something more effective than a simple combination of soap and water.

Using acetone as stain remover

Acetone is cheap and easy to get which makes it a great choice as a cleaning product. Applying acetone will help you get rid of the majority of these stains. We recommend using a small quantity of acetone when removing the stains since it is very toxic.

Keep in mind that acetone might not be the best choice if you have previously repaired material tearings in your punching bag. It will dissolve the adhesive and it will cause damage to the inside foam.

Rubbing alcohol

Using rubbing alcohol is an effective way to make your training equipment look like it is brand new. Spray the alcohol on the dirty areas and give it a scrub with a harsh cloth. Most of the stains will disappear instantly. Furthermore, rubbing alcohol has disinfectant properties and will kill viruses or bacteria.

Safety tips for using rubbing alcohol

Rubbing alcohol should be used only outside or in well-ventilated rooms. Not only rubbing alcohol evaporates quickly, but its fumes are flammable. This is why you should never use rubbing alcohol around candles, a fireplace, or a stove that is on.

Even if the stains don’t come off, don’t try to add bleach in order to make the cleaning solution more effective. A combination of bleach and rubbing alcohol will create a toxic mixture that will cause you serious medical problems.

Cleaning the plastic support

This might be the easiest part of the punching bag’s maintenance. Cleaning a plastic surface is usually quick so you will get it done in no time at all. Anyway, remember to start the cleaning from the top so you will not have to work twice.

The fastest method is to get the inferior part of the free standing bag outside and use a power washer to get it clean. However, if you are looking for a more meticulous method, here is what you need to do.

  1. Make a paste from water and baking soda. Rub the obtained paste over the plastic surface using a piece of cloth.
  2. Mix one part white vinegar with two parts water in a small recipient.
  3. Using a cloth moistened in the vinegar solution, clear the baking soda off the plastic. The reaction between baking soda and the vinegar will cause a small fizz. There is nothing to worry about.
  4. Rinse the surface with plain water and wipe it with a cloth.
  5. You can either pat the area with a dry towel or let it dry by itself.

If you want to protect the plastic surface from getting dirty or easily scratched, you can apply a coat of silicone. It will also give it a shinier look.

Pay attention to the punching bag’s base

In case you used water to fill the base of the punching bag, you should always wait for it to completely dry before storing the bag away.

The presence of a small quantity of water together with a higher temperature will create a humid environment. These are the perfect conditions for mold to grow. Not only it will give your punching bag an unpleasant smell but it might affect your health as well.

How to get rid of the mold

There are different solutions that you may use: hydrogen peroxide, chlorine bleach or distilled white vinegar. Distilled white vinegar might be the best choice because it is environmentally friendly and it has a lower price than another solution.

At the beginning of the cleaning process, you could use a garden hose or a pressure washer to wash away some of the molds. Add the distilled water and white vinegar solution into the base and move it so it will reach the surface.

When using these kinds of solutions, don’t rinse away the cleaning product entirely. Having a bit of the cleaning solution left will help prevent future mold. It doesn’t matter which part of the BOB punching bag you are cleaning. You should always read the cleaning product’s label and wear protective gloves and glasses if it is required.
